Our Story

This is the contractor
we wished we'd hired.

Craft & Key started with our own century home: a roof we could not get a contractor to show up for, and a flooded basement that came back with quotes ranging from $30,000 to $95,000 for the same work. Nick did the work properly himself, and built the contractor we wished we had found.

Why We Started

It started with our own house.

I paid my way through university working construction, on real job sites under people who had been doing it for decades. Then life took a different direction for a long stretch, and the trade stayed in my hands but not in my work.

That changed in 2021, when my partner Sonja, our son Max, and I bought our place in Toronto. It was over a hundred years old and needed real work, some of it cosmetic, a lot of it for safety, and it pulled me straight back into the trade. I came by the care for it honestly: my father spent years as a groundskeeper at Eton College, where good enough was never the standard, and Sonja's Italian family brought generations of construction know-how.

What I did not expect was how hard it would be to find someone reliable for the bigger jobs. Our roof needed proper attention and we could barely get a contractor to show up, let alone follow through. Then the basement flooded. The quotes to put it right came back ranging from $30,000 to $95,000 for the same work. When the numbers are that far apart, you stop comparing prices and start wondering who you can actually trust. That feeling stayed with me.

So I started doing the work myself, the way I would want it done on my own home, and Craft & Key grew out of that. Today we take on the larger projects homeowners worry most about getting wrong: decks and fences, garden suites, basements, roofs, and whole-home renovations. We show up, we put every number in front of you, and we treat your home the way we treat ours. That is the whole idea, and it is why homeowners feel safe handing us the big ones.

01
We answer the phone.
Sounds basic. It's the thing every client says their last contractor didn't do. You call. We pick up. If we can't, we call back the same business day.
02
Every number, shown to you.
Our quotes don't hide allowances or markups. Materials, labour, margin, contingency, listed separately. If a number changes during the build, you find out the day it changes, not at final invoice.
03
We don't disappear.
Every Craft & Key project comes with a written workmanship guarantee. If something we built fails inside the warranty period, we come back and fix it. No invoice, no excuses.

Small Build Partner Team
Carpentry · Framing · Finishing
Nick works alongside a small, consistent group of build partners who've been on Craft & Key sites for years. Not strangers bid out the morning a job starts. The same hands, the same standards, project after project.
Trusted Trades
Electrical · Plumbing · Specialty
For licensed work (electrical, plumbing, gas) we use the same vetted tradespeople project after project. We're a certified Ontario Living Wage Network employer, which means everyone on your project earns at least the Toronto Living Wage ($25.05/hr in 2025). Fair pay buys better work.
